Which Mold Removal Products Work?

When it comes to removing mold, you will need to consider where the mold is located to remove it safely. There are some surfaces that will be easier to remove mold from, whereas others will be more difficult to get mold out of effectively. Additionally, some surfaces will be more delicate than others, necessitating more gentle mold removal products.

Remember, you should never just douse a surface with any kind of mold removal product without doing spot testing to ensure that the cleaner won’t stain or ruin the surface. The last thing you want to do is to create further damage while trying to restore an area of your home or your furniture.

With all that said, these are some common mold removal products that we see working for homeowners and business owners who have experienced water damage that led to mold growth:

Bleach – Using bleach is a great way to remove mold from non-porous surfaces that won’t suffer from discoloration, like tile floors, counters, showers, and bathtubs. With gloves and eye protection on, mix one cup of bleach with one gallon of water and scrub the affected area. Ensure proper ventilation to avoid inhaling chemicals that could cause breathing problems or pain.

Hydrogen Peroxide – Hydrogen peroxide is well equipped to remove mold from a variety of surfaces, both porous and nonporous. This is a safer alternative to bleach when it comes to your safety, but it is important to note that it can also cause a whitening effect depending on the surface type and color that it’s being used on.

Vinegar – A simple spray bottle of vinegar can often help get mold out of porous surfaces like wood and drywall without any further damage. Apply undiluted vinegar directly to the moldy area and allow it to sit for 30-60 minutes and then scrub it off. You may need to repeat this process several times to get the mold off, especially in areas with a higher mold concentration.

Baking Soda – This is probably the safest mold removal solution available. Using baking soda is a natural way to remove mold from many different surfaces. To use baking soda, mix a scoop of it with a little bit of water to make a thick paste and then scrub the moldy surface with a gentle brush to avoid damaging it. This paste provides a great way to remove mold from textured surfaces where liquid cleaners may have trouble reaching into the cervices and staying there to penetrate the mold. As a bonus, baking soda can also help to draw moisture out as well, making it an especially great choice for porous surfaces.

Commercial-Grade Mold Removers – Professional mold removal companies have access to types of commercial-grade products that regular homeowners do not. As a result, they will often use stronger types of chemicals to clean up mold quickly so they can finish one job and move onto the next one without needing to re-treat the same areas over and over to eliminate the mold. They have the added benefit of already having the safety gear needed to use these cleaners effectively without risk to themselves, which makes them better equipped to handle more potent cleaners. If you can get your hands on come commercial-grade mold cleaner, always follow the safety guidelines for use and keep any people or pets out of space for the duration of the clean up and a period after to be safe. You don’t want to risk the health of your family during the mold cleanup process.
